Martin’s Drift Border Post Reopens After Being Closed Due to Flooding

Martin’s Drift Border Post, which was temporarily closed due to flooding of the Limpopo River, will resume operations on Thursday, 27th March 2025 from 1400hrs.

The border, a crucial transit point between Botswana and South Africa, was shut down earlier this month after heavy rains caused the Limpopo River to overflow, submerging access roads and posing safety risks. The decision to close both Martin’s Drift and South Africa’s Groblersbrug border posts was made jointly by immigration officials from both countries to prioritise the safety of travellers and staff.

“Please be informed that the Martin’s Drift Border Post, which was temporarily closed due to flooding of the Limpopo River, will resume operations on Thursday, 27th March 2025 from 1400hrs,” announced Botswana Unified Revenue Service(BURS).

During the shutdown, truck drivers and other travellers were redirected to alternative ports of entry, including Tlokweng and Pioneer border posts. However, the closure had significant economic repercussions, particularly for businesses in the area.

Mr. Moneedi Merafhe, Immigration Manager at Martin’s Drift Border Post, confirmed that the suspension had affected revenue collection, as the border is a major contributor to local trade and customs income. Nearby lodges, shops, food vendors, and fuel stations also reported a sharp decline in customers.

Ms. Doreen Phemelo, Manager of Kwa Nokeng Lodge, located along the Limpopo River, shared that the flooding had forced them to cancel bookings and suspend activities such as game drives and boat cruises. “The rainy season has been tough on business, especially with the border closure disrupting travel plans,” she said.

With water levels receding and access routes now deemed safe, authorities have announced the reopening of Martin’s Drift Border Post as of 1400hrs today. Travellers and transporters are advised to proceed with caution, as some areas may still be affected by residual water or debris.

Mr. Merafhe expressed relief at the resumption of operations, stating, “We appreciate the patience of the public during this period. Our teams have worked diligently to ensure a smooth and safe reopening.”

The Groblersbrug border post on the South African side is also expected to reopen in coordination with Martin’s Drift.

While the immediate crisis has passed, the incident highlights the vulnerability of border infrastructure to extreme weather. Stakeholders are calling for long-term measures to mitigate flood risks and ensure minimal disruption to cross-border trade and tourism in the future.

For now, businesses and travellers alike welcome the return of normalcy as the vital transit route springs back to life.
