Daimler Truck Southern Africa (DTSA) has unveiled four new Mercedes-Benz Actros models aimed at improving payload capacity, fuel efficiency and durability for transport operators across Southern Africa.
The launch comes as the global truck manufacturer marks 130 years since the introduction of its first truck and follows growing demand from fleet operators for vehicles that can reduce operating costs while maximising productivity.
The new additions to the Mercedes-Benz Trucks range are the Actros 2645LS/33 Base, Actros 2645LS/33 Line Haul, Actros 2652LS/33 Base and Actros 2652LS/33 Line Haul.
The trucks were officially introduced during the “Mercedes-Benz Trucks: Built With What Matters Most” event held at Daimler Truck Southern Africa’s headquarters in Centurion on 10 June.
Focus on Fleet Operator Needs
According to DTSA Group CEO and President Maretha Gerber, the introduction of the new models forms part of the company’s strategy to become more customer-focused by responding directly to market feedback.
South Africa’s freight industry continues to face rising fuel costs, increasing maintenance expenses and pressure to improve efficiency. Against this backdrop, truck buyers are placing greater emphasis on total cost of ownership rather than simply vehicle purchase price.
The newly launched Actros range has been developed with these challenges in mind.
Lighter Chassis, Higher Payload
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of an improved chassis material designed to reduce vehicle weight while maintaining strength and durability.
A lighter chassis can translate into higher payload capacity, allowing operators to move more freight per trip without compromising structural integrity. For long-haul transport companies, even small payload increases can have a significant impact on profitability over the life of a vehicle.
Fuel Efficiency Takes Centre Stage
Fuel remains one of the largest operating expenses for transport companies, making efficiency improvements a major focus area.
The new models are powered by either Mercedes-Benz’s OM460 or OM473 engines, depending on the specification.
DTSA Sales and Marketing Vice President Olaf Peterson highlighted the OM473 engine’s turbo compound technology as a key feature.

The system recovers energy from exhaust gases and transfers it directly to the crankshaft through a hydraulic clutch. By capturing energy that would otherwise be lost, the technology helps improve fuel efficiency, an increasingly important factor for fleets operating on long-distance routes throughout Southern Africa.
Built to Reduce Downtime
Vehicle downtime remains a major concern for transport operators, particularly those running demanding long-haul schedules.
To improve durability, the new Actros models are fitted with LED headlights that are expected to deliver between 30,000 and 50,000 operating hours. Compared with traditional halogen units, LED systems generally require fewer replacements, helping reduce maintenance costs and workshop visits.
The trucks are also equipped with siphon-proof fuel protection systems aimed at preventing fuel theft, a challenge that continues to affect many fleet operators across the region.
Daimler Strengthens Southern African Position
During the launch, Gerber also confirmed that Daimler Truck Southern Africa has recently been integrated into the company’s broader Latin America, Middle East and Africa region.
The move is intended to create greater collaboration between markets that share similar operating environments and customer requirements. The company believes the integration will strengthen its ability to respond to industry trends and customer needs across multiple regions.
Daimler Truck Southern Africa has operated in South Africa for more than six decades and oversees operations in nine Southern African markets. Its portfolio includes Mercedes-Benz Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Buses and FUSO Trucks, while also providing parts and support services for Freightliner and Western Star products.
The launch of the four new Actros models signals Daimler Truck’s continued focus on the Southern African transport sector, where operators are increasingly demanding vehicles that can deliver better fuel economy, increased payloads and reduced maintenance costs in a highly competitive freight environment.
