Midnight R81 Crash Near Ga-Dikgale Leaves Truck Driver Fighting for Life

A serious crash just after midnight on the R81 between Polokwane and Ga-Dikgale has left a truck driver fighting for his life, raising fresh concerns about safety on this busy stretch.

The collision, involving two trucks, happened in the early hours of the morning. Emergency services rushed to the scene, where one driver was found critically injured and in urgent need of medical attention. He was stabilised on-site before being transported to hospital.

Authorities are still on the scene managing the aftermath, with traffic disruptions continuing along the route. Motorists have been urged to expect delays and drive with extreme caution when approaching the area.

While the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, the incident has once again highlighted the risks truck drivers and other road users face on the R81.

This is not the first serious collision on this road. In September, traffic was brought to a complete standstill between Munnik and Ga-Sekgopo following a major crash involving two trucks and a minibus taxi. Reports at the time indicated that a truck rammed into the back of the taxi, forcing it into another truck ahead.

That crash left multiple occupants trapped in the wreckage, with emergency crews working against time to rescue and treat the injured. The scene caused massive congestion as law enforcement cordoned off the area.

With heavy truck traffic, tight conditions, and long-distance hauls, the R81 is becoming a pressure point for accidents. One lapse in concentration or misjudged following distance can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation.

For truckers running that route, it is another reminder to stay sharp behind the wheel. For other motorists, it is a warning not to underestimate the dangers of sharing the road with heavy vehicles.

Right now, one driver is in a critical condition because of what unfolded in a matter of seconds. And for many in the industry, it feels like this stretch of road is seeing these calls far too often.
