N1 Closed at Winburg – Motorists Advised to Use Alternative Routes

Free State police have temporarily closed the N1 near Winburg following an incident of public unrest earlier today, 30 September 2025. A group of community members has blocked the highway, stopping traffic in both directions.

Police are on the scene to ensure the safety of all road users and to restore order. All relevant authorities have been activated to assist in managing the situation.

Motorists are strongly urged to use alternative routes while the N1 remains closed. Suggested detours include:

• From Bloemfontein: R703 to Brandfort, then R30 through Theunissen to Welkom.
• From Kroonstad: R30 from Theunissen via Brandfort to Bloemfontein.
• Other options: R708 from Winburg to Theunissen.

Trucks intending to turn onto the N5 are advised to hold back until the situation has been cleared.
