Kroonstad, Free State – Authorities have urgently closed the N1 between Kroonstad and Winburg following a serious accident involving a truck carrying hazardous materials earlier this evening.
According to emergency services, the truck overturned between Kroonstad and Ventersburg, releasing a strong gas-like odour, prompting immediate safety protocols. Emergency responders are currently on the scene attempting to contain the situation and assess potential risks.
“Public safety is our number one priority,” said Mr. Sipho Towa from the Road Incident Management System (RIMS). “We are working closely with hazmat teams to ensure the area is secure and that motorists are kept out of harm’s way.”
The road closure is expected to last for at least six hours, depending on how quickly the hazardous material can be neutralised and the wreckage cleared.

Drivers are strongly advised to use the following detours:
From Kroonstad: Take the R30 via Brandfort, Virginia, and Welkom.
Alternatively: Use the R34 to Welkom, Virginia, Theunissen, Brandfort, and onto Bloemfontein.
From Ventersburg: Use the R70 through Henneman and Welkom.
Towa warned motorists to stay clear of the accident site, as some of the materials pose a risk of explosion or toxic exposure. “We urge all road users to comply with instructions from authorities. Do not stop near the area out of curiosity – your life could be in danger,” he said.
