N1 Closed Near Colesberg Due to Hazmat Incident – Alternative Routes Provided

A significant road closure is currently in effect on the N1 between Colesberg and Hanover following a hazardous materials (hazmat) incident early this morning. At approximately 05:50 AM on 2 July 2025, a truck transporting gas bottles overturned after the driver lost control while attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

This caused a gas leak, and emergency services were dispatched to the scene immediately. The situation remains dangerous, and the road is expected to remain closed for the entire day as the hazardous materials are being managed.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived on the scene at 06:35 AM, and three male individuals, classified with serious injuries, were attended to. All the other relevant authorities are on site, ensuring safety and managing the recovery process.

Due to the dangerous nature of the hazardous material involved, no towing has yet taken place. A Hazmat service provider has been called in for a proper cleanup.

In light of the closure, alternative routes are being recommended for truckers and motorists.

Both lanes of the N1 are currently closed in both directions between Colesberg and Hanover. Drivers are urged to adhere to this closure for their safety.

Alternative Routes:

From the North (Hanover side):
Travel along the N10/5 from Hanover to the N9/7/N10/5 Junction, then take the N9/7 towards Colesberg and the N1.

From the South (Colesberg side):
Take the N9/7 towards Colesberg-Noupoort, join the N10/5 at the N9/7/N10/5 Junction, and continue to Hanover. From there, rejoin the N1.

Drivers are urged to follow these alternative routes and remain cautious due to the ongoing hazmat recovery. The road will remain closed for the duration of the day, and further updates will be provided as the situation develops. All truckers and motorists are advised to stay informed and follow instructions from emergency services to ensure their safety while navigating the area.
