The N1 near Ga-Phasha in Limpopo has been completely closed to traffic on Friday evening after a crash involving a gas tanker truck and a bus, which resulted in a dangerous gas leak.
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the incident happened when the gas tanker truck collided with a bus. The impact caused the tanker to overturn and leaking gas.
Authorities say the leak poses a serious safety risk, forcing officials to shut down the N1 while emergency teams assess the situation and work to contain the hazardous gas.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported among passengers on the bus. However, the condition of the truck driver has not yet been confirmed.
Motorists travelling from Makhado toward Polokwane are being diverted before the tollgate onto the R36. From there, drivers can connect to the R81 or use the D1356 Botlokwa Road, which will take them back to the N1 further along the route.
Traffic travelling from Polokwane toward Makhado is being diverted at the Matoks offramp. Motorists are advised to take the D1356 route via Mokomene, which joins the R36 and eventually leads back to the N1 beyond the closure.

Emergency services and traffic authorities remain on scene managing the incident and monitoring the leaking tanker.
Motorists travelling through the area are urged to avoid the N1 near Ga-Phasha and make use of the alternative routes until the road can be safely reopened. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
