N1 Closure Crisis Deepens as Western Cape Government Warns Motorists to Avoid Cape Winelands Completely

The transport crisis in the Western Cape has escalated further, with the provincial government now urging motorists and truck drivers to avoid all non-essential travel to or through the Cape Winelands region as severe weather continues to hammer major routes.

The N1 at Worcester remains closed indefinitely, while multiple mountain passes and key sections of the national route network have also been shut down due to flooding, dangerous winds, debris, and rockfalls.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde confirmed that the closures are severely affecting access into and out of Cape Town, with authorities warning that conditions remain dangerous for all road users, especially heavy-duty trucks.

“Anyone currently using the N1 towards Cape Town should find a safe place to stop and wait until a more direct route opens up,” the provincial government said in its latest advisory.

The latest closures include:

• Du Toitskloof Pass
• N1 Huguenot Tunnel
• Bainskloof Pass
• N1 near the Du Kloof Lodge area, where both lanes are closed due to debris
• N1 sections near Sandhills and De Wet Kelder, closed in both directions

Traffic control measures are currently in place at the Rawsonville Weighbridge, where only one lane remains open to traffic.

Authorities have also provided updates on several mountain passes across the region.

Nuwekloof Pass is currently open to all classes of vehicles, but only from the Tulbagh side and not from Ceres. Mitchells Pass remains completely closed to all vehicles, while Theronsberg Pass has been classified as a high-risk route due to poor cellphone coverage and ongoing weather monitoring.

The warning follows earlier reports of powerful winds overturning trucks near Worcester, with transport operators being urged not to send vehicles into the affected region until conditions improve.

Emergency services across the Cape Winelands remain on high alert as flooding, rockfalls, and strong winds continue to threaten motorists and nearby communities.

The Western Cape Government said the following emergency detour routes remain available only for essential travel and should be used as a last resort:

  1. From Victoria West, divert via the R63 and R67 through Loxton, Williston, Calvinia, Nieuwoudtville, and Vanrhynsdorp before joining the N7.
  2. Before Beaufort West, divert via the R381 through Loxton, Williston, Calvinia, Nieuwoudtville, and Vanrhynsdorp to connect with the N7.
  3. At Leeu Gamka, divert via the R353 through Loxton, Williston, Calvinia, Nieuwoudtville, and Vanrhynsdorp before reconnecting with the N7.
  4. After Touws River and Kleinstraat, divert via the R318 through Montagu and Ashton towards the N2 through Swellendam and Grabouw into Cape Town.

Authorities warned that some of these roads are narrow, lack road shoulders, and include single-lane bridge sections that may not be suitable for large volumes of heavy vehicles.

Truck drivers and fleet operators are being urged to park off at safe locations and delay trips into the Western Cape until authorities declare the routes safe for travel again.
