N1 partially closed after truck crash north of Polokwane

The N1 northbound near the Engen service station at Tweefontein, north of Polokwane, has been partially closed following a motor vehicle crash.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety says the incident has affected traffic heading north towards Makhado, with motorists being redirected around the affected section.

Department spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said traffic officers were on scene managing the flow of vehicles.

“Our officers are on scene redirecting vehicles to use the shoulder lane,” Mabata said.

“Motorists are advised to be patient as this will delay traffic flow, and to approach with caution.”

The department warned that the N1 could be fully closed later to allow for the recovery of the truck and for the accident scene to be processed.

This could have a significant impact on trucks and other vehicles travelling between Polokwane and Makhado, particularly if the recovery operation takes place during a busy period.

Motorists travelling in either direction over the next two hours have been advised to consider the R36 Merebeng Road as an alternative.

From Polokwane, motorists can use the R81 to join the R36 Munik/Merebeng Road before rejoining the N1 just after the Capricorn Tollgate.

Those travelling from Makhado towards Polokwane should turn left onto the R36 before the Capricorn Tollgate, continue towards the R81 and then turn right towards Polokwane.

The department said further details about the crash would be released once they become available, with relevant stakeholders still attending to the scene.

Truckers using the N1 through Polokwane are advised to allow extra time for the affected section and to approach the area cautiously.
