The N1 between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka has reopened to traffic following the horrific crash that claimed the lives of 21 people.
The Western Cape Government has confirmed that the death toll has risen from the previously reported 18 fatalities to 21, while four people sustained serious injuries.
The crash happened at approximately 23:30 on Sunday, 13 September, involving two minibus vehicles and a station wagon.
The N1 was closed in both directions for several hours as emergency, medical, traffic and forensic teams worked at the scene.
The road has now been cleared and both lanes are open to traffic again.
The reopening will come as welcome news for long-distance truckers and other motorists who had been facing major delays and a lengthy diversion via Prince Albert Road Station, the R407 and N12.
However, road users are being warned to continue driving with caution, particularly as wet road conditions are being experienced in the area.
Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku visited the crash scene on Monday morning to receive an update from traffic officials and emergency medical personnel.
“This is a devastating loss of life,” said Sileku, while extending his condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died.
Western Cape Health and Wellness Minister Mireille Wenger also expressed condolences to the affected families and praised emergency medical personnel, healthcare workers and other first responders who worked through the night.
Authorities have urged motorists to drive carefully, obey speed limits and adjust their driving to the prevailing road conditions.
For truckers travelling the N1, the message is simple: the road is open, but don’t let the reopening turn into a rush to make up lost time.
SA Trucker extends its sincere condolences to all the families and friends who have lost loved ones in this devastating crash. We also wish those injured a full and speedy recovery.
