The N12 highway has been shut down between Klerksdorp and Wolmaransstad following a major accident involving a diesel tanker.
The crash occurred this Wednesday afternoon around 12:00 pm near Bona Bona.
The tanker, carrying 44,000 litres of diesel, overturned and came to rest on its side across the highway.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the driver was trapped in the vehicle, which was leaking diesel onto the road.
Emergency responders arrived promptly and managed to rescue the driver, who was then transported to a hospital in Klerksdorp with serious injuries.
Steven Mpato from Matlosana Disaster Management stated that the clean-up operation is expected to be extensive, as the tanker spilled its entire load of diesel.

Crews are working diligently to contain and remove the spill, which has created a significant hazard on the roadway.
