The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has announced the partial reopening of the N14 national road between Kuruman and Vryburg following extensive flood damage that forced the route’s closure.
According to SANRAL, the road reopened on Friday, 19 June 2026, but access is currently limited to light motor vehicles only. Heavy vehicles remain prohibited from using the affected section while engineers continue to assess the extent of the damage caused by recent flooding.
SANRAL said the reopening offers temporary relief to motorists and restores limited access along the important transport corridor. However, a thin layer of water remains on parts of the road surface, prompting authorities to urge road users to exercise extreme caution.
Motorists travelling through the area have been advised to adhere to the temporary speed limit of 60 km/h and to obey all warning signs indicating water on the roadway.
SANRAL North West Provincial Head, Mirriam Ramoba, said technical assessments and material testing are currently underway to determine the full extent of the damage before the route can be fully reopened to all traffic.
“The reopening is restricted to light motor vehicles only while SANRAL awaits the outcome of these investigations and develops the appropriate rehabilitation measures to ensure the long-term safety and integrity of the route,” Ramoba said.
Truck operators and other heavy vehicle users are required to continue using alternative routes, including the N18, N12 and R31.
SANRAL warned that any unauthorised use of the road contrary to the restrictions in place would be considered a violation of applicable traffic regulations.
The agency has appealed to all road users to remain vigilant and comply with temporary traffic control measures implemented on site.
SANRAL also thanked road users, freight operators, local communities and other stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the prolonged closure of the route. The agency apologised for the inconvenience caused by the flooding and said it remains committed to restoring full access to the N14 as soon as it is safe to do so.
Route Update for Truck Drivers: Heavy vehicles are still not permitted on the affected section of the N14 between Kuruman and Vryburg. Operators should continue planning trips via the N18, N12 or R31 until further notice from SANRAL.
