The truck driver involved in Saturday morning’s horror crash on the N2 between Amatigulu and Dokodweni has been confirmed dead, bringing the death toll from the accident to six.

The head-on collision occurred when a truck loaded with sugar slammed into a light motor vehicle, crushing it and instantly killing all five occupants.

At the time of the crash, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, had indicated that the truck driver was unaccounted for. He said there were suspicions that the driver was either trapped under the wreckage or had fled the scene.

Those fears were confirmed later in the afternoon when a joint operation by emergency services and IPSS Medical Search and Rescue located the driver’s body inside the wrecked truck just after 3pm.

“The body of the truck driver has been recovered under the wreckage of the cab. This brings the total number of deceased to six. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” said Duma.

Rescue teams had to use the jaws of life to cut into the mangled cab and recover the body, while the owners of the trucking company were also present at the crash scene.

Emergency services first responded to the accident at around 8am.
