Authorities have confirmed one fatality and released preliminary details about the serious crash that closed the N2 at Gamtoos Hill outside Jeffreys Bay on Wednesday morning.
One person has died and two others were injured following a multi-vehicle collision involving two cash-in-transit vehicles and a seven-seater passenger vehicle on the N2 at Gamtoos Hill outside Jeffreys Bay.
According to Eastern Cape Provincial Traffic spokesperson Unathi Binqose, the crash occurred at approximately 4:30am on Wednesday.
A preliminary report indicates that the seven-seater passenger vehicle was travelling on the wrong side of the road when it collided with one of the armoured cash-in-transit vehicles.
In an attempt to avoid the collision, the second cash-in-transit vehicle reportedly veered off the road and down an embankment.
The driver of the seven-seater was declared dead at the scene, while two security guards sustained injuries and were transported to hospital for medical treatment.
The N2 was closed for several hours as emergency services, traffic officials and investigators attended the scene and worked to clear the roadway. Motorists were advised to make use of the R102 as an alternative route while the closure remained in place.
Police have opened a case of culpable homicide, and the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
Motorists are urged to remain vigilant, especially when travelling before dawn, and to report any vehicle seen travelling on the wrong side of the road to emergency authorities as soon as it is safe to do so.
