A tragic crash has claimed multiple lives on the N2 near the Amatikulu River (Bridge 10) on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast this morning after a truck transporting LPG gas and a light motor vehicle collided, causing a major incident and widespread chaos on the busy highway.
According to emergency responders from IPSS Medical Rescue, several people were declared dead on the scene, with at least two others sustaining serious injuries. The truck, laden with highly flammable liquefied petroleum gas, posed an immediate danger, prompting authorities to declare the area unsafe for both motorists and emergency personnel.
The crash occurred just before 11h15, forcing the complete shutdown of the N2 in both directions as hazardous materials teams, paramedics, and rescue services rushed to the scene.
Cleanup and recovery efforts are expected to continue for at least six hours, with responders working under strict safety protocols due to the volatile cargo.
Motorists travelling northbound are currently being diverted at the Mandeni offramp, and officials are urging all road users to delay their travel or seek alternative routes.
