N2 closed indefinitely between Piet Retief and Pongola after acid tanker crash

The N2 highway has been closed to traffic indefinitely between Piet Retief and Pongola after a tanker truck overturned spilling the sulphuric acid it was transporting.

The scene of the crash is between Paulpietersburg turn off and Moolman turn off.

At 13h37 Mkhondo Fire and Rescue confirmed to SA Trucker that recovery of the tanker truck was complete but the road was still closed as clean-up operations were ongoing.

It’s not known what caused the Zambia-bound tanker to overturn.

Traffic is stacked at the scene on both directions.

Mkhondo Fire and Rescue says that clean-up operations are expected to complete around 18h00.

Alternative Routes

From Piet Retief – take R33 to Moolman and then go via that route to join the N2 again.

From Pongola turn Left at Moolman turn-off, continue on the route and join R33 to Piet Retief.
