N2 Partially Reopens at Kaaimans Pass Following Heavy Vehicle Crash

The N2 at Kaaimans Pass between George and Wilderness has partially reopened under a stop-and-go system following a collision between two heavy motor vehicles earlier on Sunday.

George Municipality confirmed in a statement issued at 16h11 that traffic is now being allowed to pass through the area in a controlled manner while recovery operations continue. The road had been completely closed since around 11h55 after the crash brought traffic to a standstill in both directions.

Reports from the scene suggest that one of the trucks may have lost its brakes while descending the pass and ploughed into another truck ahead of it. The impact left both vehicles blocking the roadway, forcing authorities to close the route for several hours.

Recovery efforts were briefly delayed when two tow truck operators got into a heated argument before work could begin. Traffic officers had to step in to separate the men, after which recovery resumed without further incident.

Motorists who attempted to use alternative routes, including the Seven Passes Road, have been cautioned that the road surface is currently unstable. “Travel is strongly discouraged,” the municipality said, warning that anyone choosing to use the route does so at their own risk.

Emergency services and recovery crews remain on site, clearing the wreckage and ensuring the safety of the roadway. The full reopening of the N2 will depend on the progress of these operations.

Drivers travelling between George and Wilderness are urged to be patient, follow instructions from traffic officers, and expect ongoing delays until the scene is fully cleared.
