N3 Closed at Warden After Serious Rear-end Truck Crash and Hazardous Spill

A serious collision involving two heavy motor vehicles has brought traffic to a standstill on the N3 Toll Route near Warden (N3-8 Km14.2), with cleanup and recovery efforts severely complicated by a highly flammable substance that has spilled onto the roadway.

According to the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), the crash occurred in the early hours of the morning when one truck rear-ended another on the Johannesburg-bound carriageway resulting in both the Joburg-bound and Durban-bound carriageways being obstructed.

The condition of those involved is not known yet.

Truckers reported the crash as early as 02h00 this morning and at the time of publishing, 07h30, traffic was still stacked on the scene, with no estimated time for full clearance.

Specialist teams are working to contain the hazardous spill, which poses a significant risk and is slowing down the removal of wreckage. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact nature of the material, but emergency response teams are exercising extreme caution.

Motorists are strongly advised to delay travel if possible and prepare for long delays if already on the route. The N3TC, along with road incident management teams, is working urgently to restore traffic flow, but the process is expected to take time.
