Pietermaritzburg – Traffic on the N3 southbound carriageway took a major knock this afternoon after a grain truck overturned near Armitage Road, opposite Liberty Midlands Mall, right at the bottom of Town Hill.
The incident happened just after 1pm when Mi7 Emergency Medical Services were called to reports of a motor vehicle accident on the busy stretch of highway.
On arrival, medics found that the driver of a truck loaded with grain had lost control, causing the vehicle to tip over and spill its load.
Despite the severity of the crash, the driver was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries. He was stabilised on scene before being transported by Mi7 paramedics to a nearby hospital for further care.

Recovery crews are currently on-site working to clear the wreck and spilled cargo, but traffic remains heavily backed up in the area. Authorities have urged motorists travelling southbound to seek alternative routes until the scene is cleared.
The cause of the accident will be investigated, but motorists are reminded to exercise extreme caution, especially on the steep Town Hill descent, which has been the site of numerous truck incidents in the past.
