Traffic has been brought to a complete standstill on the N4 between Rustenburg and Marikana after two trucks collided and caught fire earlier this afternoon.
According to initial reports, both trucks burst into flames on impact, with the fire spreading rapidly into nearby bushes. Thick clouds of smoke have since blanketed the area, reducing visibility to almost zero and forcing authorities to close off the road in both directions.
DA Councillor Luan Snyders confirmed the closure in a statement at 15:57, saying the nearby R104 route has also been closed as a precaution.
“Please note that the R104 is also being closed due to heavy smoke creating poor visibility. A full road closure is in effect. The N4 and R104 will remain closed until the Fire Department can contain the blaze. Your safety remains our priority — please exercise caution and avoid the affected areas if possible,” said Cllr Snyders.
