N4 Schoemanskloof Closed Amid Reported Heavy Gunfire Between Rival Zama Zama Groups

The N4 through Schoemanskloof in Mpumalanga has been completely closed after reports of heavy gunfire linked to alleged illegal mining activity in the area.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSL) confirmed that the N4 Schoemanskloof has been closed at Montrose and Crossroads due to illegal mining, commonly associated with zama zama activity.

The closure affects motorists travelling between Machadodorp and Mbombela, with authorities advising road users to avoid the area until further notice.

According to the latest traffic information, the affected sections include:

  • Bambi
  • Crossroads, from Machadodorp towards Mbombela
  • Montrose intersection

The closure follows reports of heavy gunfire involving rival groups allegedly linked to illegal mining activity. The circumstances surrounding the reported shooting have not yet been independently confirmed, and it is not yet clear whether anyone has been injured.

Law enforcement has been dispatched to the area and is currently attending to the situation.

Motorists are urged not to attempt to travel through the closed sections and to use alternative routes where possible. Traffic information advises motorists to consider diverting via Elandsvalley.

The N4 is a major freight route connecting Gauteng with Mpumalanga and the Lebombo border, meaning the closure could have a significant impact on trucks and other long-distance traffic.

SA Trucker will continue monitoring the situation and update this report as further information becomes available from authorities.
