N7 Jakes Gerwel Drive Closed at Viking Way Following a Road Surface Collapse

Motorists are being urged to avoid the N7 Jakes Gerwel Drive southbound near Viking Way in Cape Town after a road surface collapse caused by a tunnel reportedly dug underneath the Bonteheuwel Bridge.

The collapse has compromised the bridge’s structural integrity, prompting an immediate road closure.

According to Traffic Service spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout, “The closure is a precautionary measure to ensure public safety while the Roads and Infrastructure Management Department assesses the extent of the damage.”

Emergency crews have been deployed to the site to stabilize the area and begin repairs, which could take several days or weeks.

In the meantime, a contraflow lane has been established using one of the northbound lanes over the affected bridge. “For now, only light motor vehicles are allowed to use the contraflow lane,” said Bezuidenhout.

The southbound carriageway, however, remains completely closed at Viking Way.

Motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes to bypass the affected section. City officials have apologized for the disruption. “We understand this is an inconvenience, but the safety of road users is our top priority,” stated a representative from the Roads and Infrastructure Management Department.

The collapse has caused significant traffic disruption, particularly for those heading toward Mitchells Plain and surrounding areas.

Authorities are urging drivers to remain patient and cautious. “We are working around the clock to repair the damage and restore full access as quickly as possible,” confirmed a senior engineer on-site.
