N9 Reopens After Temporary Closure Due to Snowfall at Lootsberg Pass

The Eastern Cape’s Lootsberg Pass on the N9 has reopened following a temporary closure after rare November snowfall and heavy rain forced authorities to shut down the route.

The Eastern Cape Transport Department initially closed the pass to safeguard motorists amid concerns of icy conditions and potential flooding due to significant rainfall in the area.

This closure came on the heels of orange and yellow weather warnings issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), cautioning about disruptive rains and flood risks across parts of the Eastern Cape, especially around Nelson Mandela Bay.

The snowfall and wet conditions led to slippery and challenging driving conditions, particularly at higher elevations.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose had earlier advised road users to stay alert and exercise caution, especially on mountain passes like Wapadsberg and Lootsberg, where snowfall is especially uncommon this time of year.

“We were monitoring affected mountain passes, especially on the N9 between Graaff Reinet and Nxuba (Cradock),” said Binqose, who also highlighted the strain these weather conditions have placed on road infrastructure in rural areas.

The road was reopened after crews successfully cleared the snow and inspected the pass for safety.

However, motorists are still urged to drive cautiously, as weather conditions can change quickly in the region.

The department continues to monitor the area, prepared for any further actions should the weather take another turn.

With the N9 once again accessible, road users are reminded to stay vigilant and aware of potentially hazardous conditions as summer rains and unpredictable weather continue to impact travel across parts of the province.
