Nationwide Strike Alert: COSATU Plans Mass Action on 7 October 2024

On Monday, 7 October 2024, South Africa will experience a nationwide strike led by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), as they protest against job losses, rising living costs, and economic challenges.

The protest will kick off at 00:00 and conclude at 23:59, with major disruptions expected throughout the day.

COSATU’s demands include the halting of retrenchments, an end to privatisation, and the implementation of labour law reforms.

They are also calling for the government to address crime, corruption, and economic policies, with particular focus on high unemployment and the cost of living.

The federation has warned that these issues represent “bread and butter” concerns for workers, highlighting the need for immediate action.

COSATU spokespersons in KZN emphasised the increasing unemployment rate, stating, “About 11.3 million people in our country need jobs, but workers are retrenched daily under the narrow application of Section 189.”
