Near miss after near miss as truck struggles to stay in lane on R34

A video circulating online appears to show a side tipper truck narrowly avoiding several potential collisions while travelling along the R34 near Melmoth on Friday night.

SA Trucker is working to establish exactly what happened and has contacted Ni-Da Transport for comment.

At the start of the footage, the truck appears to be travelling on the incorrect side of the road as an approaching vehicle comes towards it.

The truck appears to brake, but does not immediately move back into its lane. The person recording from a vehicle behind can be heard expressing concern about the situation.

The truck eventually moves back into its lane, apparently avoiding a potential head-on collision.

But the near misses don’t end there.

The footage appears to show the truck repeatedly struggling to maintain its lane, moving from side to side as it travels along the R34.

At times, the truck appears to cross the solid centre line and at other points moves onto the shoulder.

Less than two minutes into the footage, the truck appears to come dangerously close to a car while negotiating a bend.

It then appears to move towards an approaching truck, with the two vehicles seemingly coming close to a head-on collision before the truck moves back into its lane.

The footage raises obvious questions about what caused the truck to struggle to maintain its lane.

However, the video alone does not establish whether the cause was mechanical, medical, environmental or related to the driver’s condition or actions.

Ni-Da Transport has been contacted by SA Trucker and given an opportunity to comment on the incident, including whether the company is aware of the footage, whether the vehicle belongs to the company and whether the truck was inspected afterwards.

SA Trucker will update this story as more information becomes available.
