Ngqura Container Terminal (NCT) has stamped its authority as South Africa’s top container hub after delivering record-breaking performances and scooping the title of Best Performing Container Terminal in the inaugural Ground Breakers League.

According to Transnet, NCT outdid itself with back-to-back milestones in August 2025. Between 4 and 10 August, the terminal handled 15 671 TEUs against a target of 14 614. The following week, from 11 to 17 August, it rewrote the history books by moving an unprecedented 21 480 TEUs – the highest weekly volume ever recorded at Ngqura.

This comes on the back of a powerful July performance where the Eastern Cape terminal recorded a 47% year-on-year revenue growth, fuelled by a 48% surge in imports and a 57.5% increase in exports.

The winning streak extended beyond the numbers. In Transnet’s Ground Breakers League – a new platform created to recognise excellence across South Africa’s terminals – Ngqura was crowned the country’s best container terminal. The East London Multipurpose Terminal also took honours as Best Auto Terminal, showcasing the strength of the region’s port operations.

Industry watchers say the achievements highlight how Eastern Cape terminals are not only weathering global supply chain pressures but also setting new standards in teamwork, productivity, and customer service.

“These wins are proof that we can compete at world-class levels and play a major role in driving South Africa’s economic growth,” Transnet said in a statement.

With record volumes, rising revenues and national recognition, Ngqura is firmly positioning itself as a key gateway for the country’s trade future.
