Ngqura to Berth MSC Nicola Mastro, its Largest-Ever Container Vessel

The Ngqura Container Terminal is preparing to receive its largest vessel to date, MSC Nicola Mastro, marking a significant operational milestone for Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) and the broader Eastern Cape region.

Scheduled to arrive today, Thursday, 3 July 2025 (weather permitting), the MSC Nicola Mastro – a colossal vessel measuring 400m in length and 61m in beam – will exceed the size of any vessel previously handled at the terminal.

Until now, the port’s benchmark had been ships of the 366-metre class.

This arrival of the ultra-large container vessel (ULCV) is a first for the port, presenting a major test of Ngqura’s operational and engineering capabilities. With a tidal draft of 16.1 meters, the vessel’s berthing will add further complexity to the operation, showcasing the terminal’s readiness to handle the world’s biggest ships.

TPT’s regional planning and engineering teams have been working in unison with shipping lines and marine stakeholders, running advanced simulations and conducting site readiness checks for weeks to ensure a smooth process.

“This historic vessel call is a proud moment for the Ngqura Container Terminal. It demonstrates our readiness to handle the world’s biggest ships and reinforces our role as a world-class terminal in Africa’s logistics chain,” said Wandisa Vazi, managing executive for TPT’s Eastern Cape Region.

The MSC Nicola Mastro’s arrival is a key part of TPT’s broader strategy to position Ngqura as a leading trans-shipment hub for Southern Africa. With increasing investment in infrastructure, technology, and collaboration among stakeholders, the terminal is focused on enhancing efficiency and reliability across its service network.

This milestone reaffirms Ngqura’s strategic importance in Southern Africa’s maritime industry, further consolidating its place as a critical link in global trade routes.
