No Closure on R75 from 16–20 June: Traffic Officials Refute Viral Shutdown Claims

Reports circulating on social media and in some publications claiming the R75 between Jansenville and Graaff-Reinet will be completely closed from Monday, June 16 to Friday, June 20, 2025, are false and misleading.

Authorities on the ground have confirmed that the R75 remains open to traffic, with no scheduled full road closure this week.

At a site meeting held today, 16 June, on the R75 where the overturned transformer remains, officials from the Sarah Baartman District, Provincial Traffic, and the contractor involved in the recovery operation addressed the rumours.

“The road is not closed and it’s not going to be closed,” said CPI Lunga Xasholo from the Sarah Baartman District. “The contractor will be loading the transformer and moving it further down — completely off the roadway — where it will wait for the required permit to continue transportation.”

Graaff-Reinet Provincial Traffic Station Acting Chief Tyaliti, SPI Van Antwerpen, CPI Xasholo, and Stephen Marshall of P&L Machine and Rigging were all present at the site meeting, monitoring the area and confirming that traffic is flowing as normal.

The transformer in question had remained on the shoulder of the R75 near Ravelskloof — about 15km north of Jansenville — after the truck transporting it overturned in March this year. Contrary to viral claims, the transformer has not been blocking both lanes, and no complete closure has been deemed necessary for its recovery.

Motorists are advised to disregard the unverified messages doing the rounds online suggesting a full road closure and alternative detour routes.

“We urge the public to rely on verified updates from SAPS, Provincial Traffic, or official contractors on-site. We are monitoring the situation closely,” added Xasholo.

The R75 remains open to all road users, with officials ensuring safety and minimal disruption during the recovery process.
