Police in the Western Cape have seized a truckload of illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R10 million following an intelligence-driven operation in Swellendam.
The operation, which involved the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team, Swellendam SAPS, SARS’ Syndicated Tax & Customs Crime unit, and the Illicit Economy Activities Unit, led to the confiscation of a truck suspected of transporting the contraband.
According to police, on Thursday, 11 September 2025, Swellendam Vispol members received information about a truck travelling from Mossel Bay to Swellendam with a suspected load of illicit cigarettes destined for a local shop. The vehicle was intercepted and searched, uncovering the illegal cargo.

A day later, on Friday, 12 September 2025, a 44-year-old shop owner was arrested in connection with the consignment. Police confirmed that he faces charges of fraud, forgery, uttering, and contravention of sections of the Customs and Excise Act.
The suspect is expected to appear before court on Monday, 15 September 2025.
Authorities say the origin of the seized goods is still under investigation.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani said the successful operation highlights the ongoing crackdown on illicit trade, which robs the state of billions in tax revenue and fuels organised crime networks.
