Reports indicate that the bus crashed into the rear of a broken-down side tipper truck. The impact was severe, with the left side of the bus becoming embedded approximately three metres into the trailer. Videos circulating on social media show the extent of the damage, with only a small section of the trailer’s front visible as the bus remained lodged underneath it.

The department confirmed that one educator succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Another educator was airlifted to Bloemfontein for urgent medical treatment, while three additional educators were transported to hospitals in Kimberley. Their conditions have been described as critical.

The learners involved in the accident sustained minor injuries and received the necessary medical attention.

Following the tragedy, the planned sports day was cancelled.

The Northern Cape Department of Education expressed its deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families, colleagues and learners affected.

“The department extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and learners affected by this tragic loss. We also wish all those who were injured a full and speedy recovery,” the department said in a statement.

The department further confirmed that immediate psychosocial support and counselling services were provided to affected learners and educators. Additional counselling sessions have been scheduled for Monday, 15 June, at Kathu Primary School to assist learners, staff and the wider school community as they come to terms with the tragedy.

Officials said the district office is working closely with the school and affected families to provide the necessary support and assistance during this difficult time.

The cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed and investigations are expected to continue.
