One Driver Killed, Two Injured in Attack on E-Hailing Drivers at Maponya Mall

Soweto – A violent attack on e-hailing drivers outside Maponya Mall on Wednesday evening has left one driver dead and two others injured.

According to police, the incident began when an e-hailing vehicle stopped near the mall’s entrance. Four armed men reportedly approached the car, opened fire on the driver, and then set the vehicle alight.

“Another e-hailing vehicle nearby was also targeted. The driver managed to escape on foot, but his vehicle was torched as well,” said SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

Tragically, both the first driver and an innocent passerby were struck by gunfire. Emergency services rushed the injured to hospital, but the first driver was later declared dead. The second victim and the passerby are receiving treatment.

Police, together with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, have launched an investigation. A case of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and arson has been opened.

While the motive for the attack has not yet been confirmed, authorities have not ruled out links to tensions in the taxi industry, where disputes over routes and market share have previously led to violent clashes.

Maponya Mall security has increased patrols in the area, and police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
