One person was tragically killed in a horrific multi-vehicle crash on the N2 near Gingindlovu on Sunday night, heading towards Mtunzini in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after IPSS Medical Rescue received reports of a serious motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival, paramedics found that two vehicles had collided head-on, with one vehicle engulfed in flames.

According to the Department of Transport and Human Settlements spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, the vehicle that caught fire burned completely, making it impossible to immediately determine how many people had been inside. It’s now confirmed that at least one person perished in the blaze.

A white Toyota Fortuner, carrying a family of four including two young children, was one of the vehicles involved. IPSS Advanced Life Support paramedics treated the family on scene for moderate to critical injuries before they were transported to hospital for further care.

Photos released by the KZN Department of Transport show the charred remains of the vehicle that caught fire, while the Fortuner sustained visible front-end damage.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC has extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, stating, “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic crash.”

Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash and to establish the full number of victims in the burnt-out vehicle.
