Oshoek Border Reopens for Freight and Travellers After Accident Disruption

Truckers and travellers using the Oshoek Port of Entry between South Africa and Eswatini can now breathe a sigh of relief as operations have fully resumed following a serious truck accident that disrupted traffic on 26 January 2025.

The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato, alongside the South African Revenue Service (SARS), confirmed that a full safety assessment had been conducted, and the border is now back to normal operations for both cargo and passenger traffic.

On 26 January, a truck accident at the border caused significant delays, impacting freight movement and traveller crossings. Due to safety concerns and the need for thorough clearance operations, authorities temporarily restricted access, causing frustration among truckers and cross-border businesses.

The BMA and SARS, working in coordination with local law enforcement and emergency services, ensured that the port was cleared and deemed safe for operations as quickly as possible. Their swift response prevented prolonged disruptions that could have had severe economic effects on trade between South Africa and Eswatini.

Oshoek is one of the busiest ports of entry between the two countries, serving as a major corridor for goods transported via road. Any delay at this crossing can lead to backlogs, increased fuel costs, and missed delivery deadlines. Now that operations have resumed, truckers can expect normal processing times, but it’s always advisable to check for updates before heading to the border.

There might still be minor congestion as authorities work through any backlog.
