Owner Truck Driver Busted with R50 Million Worth of Crystal Meth

SAPS has arrested a 35-year-old truck driver from Gauteng after he was caught transporting a staggering 313.5 kg of crystal meth worth R50 million. This arrest comes as part of the ongoing Interprovincial Crime-Combat Operation, which has seen collaborative efforts from police forces across the Free State, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Northern Cape.

At approximately 10:30 AM on 25 March 2025, Aliwal North Detectives and Crime Intelligence (CI) received a tip-off about a truck travelling from Smithfield to Aliwal North, suspected of carrying illegal substances. The truck was quickly intercepted at the bridge, and officers escorted it into the town for a detailed search.

Thanks to the quick action of the K9 Unit and the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), a thorough inspection of the truck revealed 12 large bags of crystal meth hidden inside the vehicle. The total weight of the drugs was 313.5 kg, with a street value estimated at R50 million.

The driver, who is also the owner of the truck, was arrested at the scene. The 35-year-old man now faces serious charges for drug trafficking and is expected to appear before the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court.

This arrest highlights the importance of being aware of the loads being transported, ensuring that everything on board is legal, and working with authorities to help keep our industry safe.
