A man suspected of being part of an alleged nationwide vehicle licensing fraud syndicate has been arrested in Parys, Free State, following a joint intelligence-led operation by law enforcement agencies investigating the misuse of official National Traffic Information System (Natis) accounts.
The suspect was arrested on Monday night, 28 July 2026, during an operation involving the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) National Anti-Corruption Unit, SAPS Crime Intelligence, the Hawks and specialised cyber units.
According to investigators, the suspect allegedly operated from his private residence, where authorities reportedly discovered an active Natis logon screen with a user number and password already entered. Police also recovered Natis printouts and reports linked to several provinces, raising concerns about the scale of the alleged operation.
During the search, investigators seized black flash books, documents containing vehicle licence plate details, Natis login credentials, identity numbers, a black cooler bag filled with documents, an HP laptop and desktop computers believed to have been used in the alleged scheme.
The suspect, who is believed to be an IT specialist, allegedly told investigators that the operation involved former transport department officials and active Natis users. Authorities believe the syndicate operated across Gauteng, the Free State and other provinces, using official system access to fraudulently process vehicle licence renewals.

Investigators allege the group specifically targeted driving licence testing centres where biometric verification systems had not yet been introduced. By allegedly using legitimate Natis credentials, members of the syndicate were able to access the system and capture roadworthy declarations and other licensing transactions.
The RTMC and police said they have been investigating the alleged syndicate for the past three years as part of an ongoing crackdown on corruption within South Africa’s vehicle licensing system.
Authorities believe additional suspects have been identified and say more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Parys Magistrate’s Court on 30 July 2026, where he is expected to face charges related to fraud, corruption and the unlawful use of the Natis system.
The investigation remains ongoing, and all allegations against the suspect will be tested in court.
