A 48-year-old truck driver has been arrested in Zimbabwe after police allegedly discovered a stash of smuggled pharmaceutical drugs hidden inside a fuel tanker.
The bust took place on Friday, 14 November 2025, along the Harare–Chirundu Road near the 336km peg.
According to authorities, officers from Chirundu Police stopped and searched the tanker as part of routine checks along the busy cross-border trucking corridor. During the inspection they uncovered boxes of medical products concealed inside the vehicle. The driver, identified as Elisha Nemaungwe, was immediately detained.
Police say the haul included:
- 158 packs of Combo Pain tablets containing 50 strips of 10 tablets each
- 225 packs of C4 tablets (10 strips of 10 tablets each)
- 70 vials of 20ml Lidocaine injections
- 5 packs of Diclofenac ampoules, each pack containing 100 units
The items are believed to have been transported without legal documentation and intended for distribution through illegal networks. Pharmaceutical smuggling has become a growing concern within the region, with authorities warning that uncontrolled circulation of medical drugs poses serious public health risks.
Zimbabwean police confirmed that Nemaungwe is currently in custody and investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the consignment and whether additional suspects or syndicates are involved.
The Chirundu Border Post is a key gateway for freight movement between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and it sees heavy truck traffic daily. Law enforcement agencies have recently intensified searches on long-distance vehicles transporting commercial cargo, fuel and consumer products, hoping to clamp down on drug trafficking and other cross-border crimes.
Officials urged truckers to remain compliant with customs regulations and to avoid getting mixed up in illegal deals that could cost them their jobs, freedom or professional reputation.
More updates will follow as the case progresses.
