Spikes in r104

Gauteng Police have warned motorists using the R104, on the old main road between Pretoria and Bronkhorstspruit, to be careful at night.

This follows information received by Boschkop police of criminals placing spikes on the road to trap unsuspecting motorists.

“We are monitoring the highway and working round the clock to arrest perpetrators,” said Boschkop police spokesperson Warrant Officer Cobus Ras.

The spikes were covered in black refuse bags and placed in the road to puncture vehicles’ tyres.

“As soon as you stop, you are robbed,” said Ras.

Ras urged motorists not to stop on the side of the road, especially near or under a bridge.

“Criminals use different tactics to stop motorists on the highway. As you drive over the object, criminals count on the fact that you will stop to investigate. Do not pull over immediately. Drive as far as you can to your nearest safe destination,” said Ras.

Ras said that no serious injuries have been reported and no arrests have been made.

Incidents can be reported by phoning Boschkop police at 012-802-8200.

Similar incidents were reported in the north and eastern parts of Pretoria, including the N4 between Pretoria towards Witbank, Donkerhoek towards the Diamond Hill Plaza and the old Bronkhorstspruit Road.

Noone arrests have been made yet.
