Policeman, American Tourist Amongst 3 Killed in R540 Crash Near Dullstroom

A policeman and two women were killed in a head-on crash on the R540 highway between Dullstroom and Belfast on Thursday afternoon.

Among the deceased is an American tourist.

The accident occurred around 17:30, approximately 15km before Dullstroom and 2km after the Palmer turnoff.

A police bakkie travelling from Belfast to Dullstroom collided head-on with a white bakkie heading towards Belfast.

According to reports, the policeman exited his vehicle shortly after the crash to call for help.

Tragically, he collapsed and died at the scene after walking just a few steps.

In the police vehicle, there was also a woman who was critically injured.

The white bakkie contained a young man and his mother, an American tourist.

Emergency responders rushed both critically injured women to the Belfast Hospital.

Unfortunately, the woman from the white bakkie was pronounced dead on arrival.

The woman from the police vehicle succumbed to her injuries an hour after reaching the hospital.

The young man was initially treated at the Belfast Hospital before being transferred to the Middelburg Hospital for X-rays.

He was then returned to the Belfast Hospital and later transferred to the Witbank Hospital this Friday morning.

The victims’ identities have not yet been released.
