Pressure Mounts on Government to Fast-Track Digital Driver’s Licence

South Africa’s growing driver’s licence crisis has turned the spotlight firmly onto the government’s sluggish progress in rolling out a digital alternative. With Parliament openly frustrated and motorists increasingly angry over endless backlogs, the push for an electronic driver’s licence (eDL) is fast becoming unavoidable.

The current system, dependent on a single 20-year-old printing machine, has collapsed under pressure. At one point this year, more than 700,000 cards were stuck in the queue, with drivers forced to operate on expired documents while waiting months for renewals.

Parliament’s Select Committee on Infrastructure believes the answer is obvious: go digital. Chairperson Rikus Badenhorst said this week that a smartphone-based licence would cut through the chaos, reduce fraud, and end the country’s dependence on outdated printing equipment. “We all bank on our phones,” he argued, “so why can’t we carry our licences on them too?”

The Department of Transport has previously said that the Government Printing Works is researching digital options, focusing on security features such as biometric authentication and QR codes. The eDL would allow drivers to store their licence on a mobile app, verified in real-time against eNaTIS — a shift that could transform how licences are issued, renewed, and policed.

Yet delays persist. The digital licence was initially meant to launch in March 2025, but tender disputes, cybersecurity concerns, and bureaucratic red tape have pushed timelines back, with insiders now hinting at 2026.

As frustration mounts, the push for digital licences has become more than a convenience issue — it’s a demand for efficiency, accountability, and an end to the cycle of breakdowns and backlogs that continue to cost motorists and the economy alike.
