A major drug bust at Durban Harbour has put law enforcement on high alert after cocaine worth an estimated R13 million was discovered hidden inside buses shipped from South America.
The seizure took place on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, following a targeted intelligence-driven operation by KwaZulu-Natal police.
Officers from the Durban Operational Response Services and the Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit zeroed in on vessels linked to a previous drug recovery in Gauteng last month.

During the inspection, authorities uncovered 32 tightly packed blocks of suspected cocaine concealed inside the air-conditioning compartment of one of the buses. The vehicles were reportedly en route to Gauteng, raising concerns about how deeply organised crime networks are operating across provinces.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the shipment entered the country through Durban Harbour. He explained that intelligence-led profiling of incoming vessels played a key role in intercepting the drugs before they could reach their final destination.
So far, no arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing to identify both the individuals behind the shipment and the intended receivers inland.
This bust once again shines a spotlight on South Africa’s ports being used as key entry points for international drug trafficking. With Durban Harbour handling massive volumes of cargo daily, authorities are under pressure to stay one step ahead of syndicates using increasingly creative smuggling methods.

For truckers and logistics operators, this also raises serious questions about cargo integrity and the risks of unknowingly transporting illegal goods. As investigations continue, law enforcement is expected to tighten monitoring at ports and along major freight routes heading inland.
