The R26 between Bethlehem and Reitz in the Free State has been closed following multiple crashes reported early this morning amid extremely poor visibility caused by heavy mist.
According to the Free State Road Incident Management System (RIMS), emergency services are responding to at least two serious incidents along the route.
One crash occurred at the R26/R57 intersection, where a truck and a light motor vehicle collided.
A second incident, reported further along the R26 near Danielskuil, involves three buses and a truck. The full extent of injuries or fatalities has not yet been confirmed.
Law enforcement officers, emergency medical services and other response teams are currently on scene managing the incidents and assisting those involved.
Authorities say visibility in the area remains extremely poor, making driving conditions hazardous.
Motorists Urged to Avoid the Area
Road users are strongly advised to avoid travelling on the affected section of the R26 if possible. Those who must travel are urged to:
- Delay their journey until visibility improves where possible.
- Switch on headlights.
- Reduce speed significantly.
- Maintain a safe following distance.
- Obey all instructions from emergency personnel and traffic officials on scene.
Motorists should also expect significant delays and possible diversions while recovery and rescue operations continue.
