The R502 between Leeudoringstad and Makwassie has been closed to traffic after a tanker transporting ammonium nitrate overturned after colliding with a light delivery vehicle.

The truck driver was seriously injured in the crash and has been transported to the hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Due to the hazardous nature of the situation, emergency services, including hazardous materials teams, are on-site to contain the spill of approximately 45 litres of ammonium nitrate. Ammonium nitrate, classified under UN Code 2426, is a powerful oxidizer that can intensify fires and become highly explosive if exposed to heat or contamination. It poses significant dangers, especially in the case of a spill, which is why the area is being treated with extreme caution.

Authorities have warned anyone nearby to maintain a safe distance from the crash site. Exposure to the chemical could lead to respiratory problems or skin irritation, and those feeling unwell should seek immediate medical attention.

The road closure is expected to last for several hours, and authorities will provide updates as the situation develops. Motorists are urged to stay informed and plan their travel accordingly.
