The R521 road between Polokwane and Dendron has officially reopened following the successful cleanup of a chemical spill caused by a serious crash earlier this week involving a Heavy Motor Vehicle transporting hydrochloric acid and a Light Delivery Vehicle.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed that the road was reopened at 07:45 on Wednesday morning, after a coordinated response by multiple emergency and environmental teams.

Authorities had closed the route on 28 July as a safety precaution after a spillage of hydrochloric acid, a highly corrosive substance that posed environmental and public health risks.

“We thank all the stakeholders who worked tirelessly on this incident, including the cleaning company, Municipal Environmental Health, SAPS, Traffic officials, and EMS, for their commitment to public safety and swift action,” the department said in a statement.

Motorists were diverted to Moletji Road while specialists from a Johannesburg-based spill response team conducted the cleanup and neutralisation process.

The department also expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation and patience during the extended road closure and has urged drivers to remain cautious as they return to using the reopened route.
