Polokwane – The R521 road between Polokwane and Dendron has been closed following a serious accident involving a tautliner truck transporting hydrochloric acid and a light delivery vehicle.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed the closure and warned that the road is likely to remain inaccessible for an extended period.

The crash occurred about 10 kilometres outside Polokwane.

It was initially thought that the truck was a fuel tanker, but authorities have since clarified it was in fact a tautliner carrying hydrochloric acid – a hazardous chemical that is extremely corrosive and poses serious environmental and health risks.

Emergency services are currently on the scene, including the SAPS, Traffic officials, EMS, and Municipal Environmental Health personnel.

A preliminary assessment suggests that acid may have spilled onto the road surface and possibly into nearby farmland, triggering urgent environmental safety protocols.

To manage the situation, authorities have called for the assistance of a specialised chemical spillage company based in Johannesburg, which was expected to arrive later today.

Road Closure and Diversions

As a precaution, the R521 has been completely closed off, and authorities have confirmed that the closure is expected to last throughout the night, if not longer.

All traffic is being diverted via Moletji Road, and motorists are urged to avoid the area entirely.

Environmental and Public Safety Risks

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has raised concerns about the possible contamination of soil and water sources in nearby areas. The department is urging the public, particularly farmers and local communities, to remain alert and follow updates closely.

“Motorists are advised to exercise caution and adhere strictly to the diversion routes and safety instructions provided by authorities,” the department said in a statement.
