The R59 between Sasolburg and Vereeniging is currently closed following a serious collision involving a light motor vehicle and a heavy motor vehicle.
According to an alert issued by Mr S.S. Towa, the heavy motor vehicle caught fire after the crash.
One person was declared deceased at the scene, while two others sustained moderate injuries.
The roadway has been closed to allow emergency services and law enforcement officials to conduct the accident investigation, clean-up and recovery operations.
Motorists travelling between Sasolburg and Vereeniging are urged to avoid the affected section and make use of alternative routes where possible.
Law enforcement agencies are currently at the scene and managing traffic. Motorists approaching the area are urged to slow down, follow officials’ instructions and avoid entering the closed section of road.
The circumstances surrounding the collision, including what led to the crash and the identities of those involved, have not yet been confirmed.
