The R59 northbound is currently closed under the Boy Louw Bridge following a truck incident in which a tanker trailer overturned and lost its load.
The incident occurred on the route from Vereeniging/Vanderbijlpark towards Alberton, with the overturned tanker reportedly spilling a product onto the roadway.
The nature of the spilled product has not yet been confirmed.
Authorities have closed the road to allow emergency crews to secure the scene, assess the spilled substance and conduct recovery and clean-up operations.
There is currently no estimated time for the road to reopen.
Motorists and truck drivers travelling in the area are urged to avoid the R59 northbound at Boy Louw Bridge and use alternative routes where possible.
Traffic delays are expected to build up around the closure as recovery operations continue.
