Relief on the Cards as Fuel Prices are Expected to Drop Next Week

If there’s one thing that gets truckers grinning at the pumps, it’s a drop in diesel prices — and that’s exactly what’s coming this May.

According to the Central Energy Fund (CEF), diesel users can expect a lekker 37 cents per litre cut — both on 0.05% and 0.005% sulphur diesel.

With diesel being the lifeblood of the transport game, this is a welcome break for the long-haul okes grinding across Mzansi.

Petrol heads aren’t left out either.

Petrol 93 will come down by 18c/litre and 95 by 19c/litre.

But for us in the heavy-duty lane, it’s that diesel dip that makes all the difference to the bottom line.

So, what’s behind the fuel relief?

International oil prices have taken a knock thanks to trade tensions stirred up by US President Donald Trump’s import tariffs, which are slowing global trade and, in turn, oil demand.

Locally, the rand has been playing nicely for a change — sitting below R19 to the dollar — which, paired with improved investor confidence in the new Government of National Unity and a strong gold price, gives the economy a bit of breathing room.

Experts say the drop in energy import costs could ease pressure on inflation. But while that’s good news, not everything is sunshine and rainbows — weaker prices for exports like platinum and coal could balance things out.

Still, for now, truckers can at least enjoy some relief at the pump.

Expected May Fuel Price Adjustments:

  • Diesel 0.05% – down 37c/litre
  • Diesel 0.005% – down 37c/litre
  • Petrol 93 – down 18c/litre
  • Petrol 95 – down 19c/litre
