In the wake of the horrific accident on Baden Powell Drive near Rocklands in Mitchells Plain last week, our trucking community was struck by the devastating loss of one of our own.
Adam Filander, 54, was the innocent truck driver tragically killed in the collision involving a hijacked vehicle belonging to a policeman.
The incident unfolded when three men hijacked the police officer’s car at Monwabisi beach, only to crash into Filander’s truck while fleeing the scene.
Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, Adam Filander and the three hijackers were declared deceased at the scene.
Adam’s family is reeling from the shock of his sudden and senseless death.
His sister-in-law, Maureen Juries, shared the heart-wrenching moment the family learned of the accident: “His wife was expecting him to come home, but he never arrived. This is a huge shock to us. They have two kids and four grandchildren. This loss is unimaginable.”
Adam’s daughter, Tania Filander, described her father as a dedicated family man who brought warmth and stability to their lives.

“He was a very good father, husband, and grandpa to all of us. We will miss him dearly. He was very humble and calm. His favourite phrase was ‘daai’s die ding’.”
Adam’s co-workers, who were also in the truck, survived the crash and were rushed to the hospital.
Their survival is a small consolation in the face of such a great loss.
A neighbourhood watch member who witnessed the aftermath described the scene as gruesome, emphasizing the severity of the impact that split the hijacked car into two.
As fellow truck drivers, we understand the daily risks we face on the road.
Adam’s death is a stark reminder of the unpredictability and dangers we encounter.
He was not just a driver but a husband, father, and grandfather whose life was tragically cut short due to senseless violence.
We urge our trucking community to come together in support of Adam’s family during this difficult time.
Let us extend our condolences and offer any assistance we can to help them cope with their loss. Adam Filander’s legacy will live on in the memories of his loved ones and the hearts of his fellow truck drivers.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Filander family. Rest easy, Adam.
