Rhenus Opens R440 Million High-Tech Facility in Johannesburg

The Rhenus Group has made a substantial R440 million investment in Gauteng with the opening of its massive 28,000-square-meter facility in Meadowview, Johannesburg.

This state-of-the-art setup, designed for streamlined logistics, features a 24,500-square-meter warehouse, a 3,000-square-meter office space, and cutting-edge tech to enhance operational efficiency. This upgrade more than doubles the company’s previous footprint in Long Meadow.

According to Rhenus Warehousing Solutions MEA CEO, Cornell van Rooyen, the relocation brings a significant boost in operational capacity and efficiency. “We’ve consolidated operations to a single site, which has not only optimized workflows but also positioned us for further growth in South Africa,” says Van Rooyen. “With this move, we’re better equipped to meet the growing demand from our customers.”

The new facility’s location near OR Tambo International Airport and City Deep Container Terminal keeps it accessible for current clients, all while reducing disruptions for the team. This move is a game-changer for productivity, allowing Rhenus to handle larger volumes and provide customized logistics solutions to its customers.

Dirk Goedhart, MD of Rhenus Air & Ocean South Africa, says the facility’s design allows for seamless cargo movement across divisions, giving Rhenus a clear competitive edge.

Advanced Security and Sustainability

Security is tight, with over 600 CCTV cameras, high-clearance fencing, and a security tower overseeing the facility 24/7. With Rhenus handling high-value goods, this level of security is crucial, making it one of the safest warehouses in South Africa.

Rhenus is also big on sustainability. Equipped with a 500kW PV solar setup, lithium-ion battery backup, and diesel generators, the facility can run independently for up to eight hours. Rainwater harvesting, LED lighting, and motion sensors support eco-friendly operations, while an expansive stormwater tank and borehole meet all water demands on-site.

Specialized Storage and New Job Opportunities

For unique warehousing needs, the facility has a 1,300-square-meter refrigeration zone, including -20°C cold storage for perishables. Rhenus has also dedicated 1,600 positions specifically for lithium-ion battery storage—an uncommon feature globally and a first in South Africa.

The opening of this facility brings new job prospects to Johannesburg, including additional managerial roles and skilled technician positions to operate the new tech.

With this R440 million investment, Rhenus underscores its commitment to South Africa and aims to make the facility a centrepiece of its 2030 growth strategy. “This new setup is built for the future, supporting our clients’ demands and our goal of leading in logistics innovation,” concludes Goedhart.
