Road Freight Pioneer Phil Erasmus Passes Away

The South African road freight industry is mourning the loss of one of its true pioneers, Phil Erasmus, whose passing was confirmed by the Road Freight Association this Thursday afternoon.

Erasmus was widely respected as a founding figure in organised road transport and served as the first Chairman of the Public Hauliers Association, the body that later evolved into the RFA. At a time when road carriers faced intense pressure from the railways and a tightly controlled permit system, he played a central role in bringing operators together under one voice to protect and advance the interests of the sector.

According to Focus on Transport, he joined Tanker Services in 1961, when the company operated a fleet of just five tankers. Over the next 35 years, Erasmus helped transform it into one of the most professional and profitable transport operations in the country.

His philosophy was clear and practical. If you want to cut costs and boost margins, start with your drivers.

After studying international best practice in the United States, Erasmus became convinced that education and training were the backbone of a successful fleet.

On returning to South Africa, he established a structured driver training school and introduced compulsory two-week training programmes, followed by annual refresher courses.

Drivers were paid competitively and rewarded through a demerit-based bonus system that encouraged discipline and excellence behind the wheel.

The results spoke for themselves. Accident rates dropped. Maintenance and tyre costs came down. Brake linings and driveline components lasted longer. Breakdowns were reduced and customers received more reliable service.

Erasmus also prioritised preventative maintenance, fleet cleanliness and real time management information systems to monitor performance. Importantly, maintenance teams were given authority to stop vehicles deemed unroadworthy, reinforcing a strong safety culture.

Through his leadership at Tanker Services and his role in organised industry structures, Phil Erasmus helped shape modern road freight in South Africa.

He leaves behind a legacy built on professionalism, discipline and respect for the driver.

Rest in peace, Phil. Your impact on the industry will not be forgotten.
